Fourth Scorpene Submarine ‘VELA’ Delivered To Indian Navy under Project – 75
Scorpene-class submarines
These are a class of diesel-electric attack submarines. It features additional air-independent propulsion.
These are one of the most advanced conventional submarines in the world.
These Submarines have a diving depth of more than 350 m and have the ability to remain submerged for 21 days.
The submarine has superior stealth features, such as advanced acoustic silencing techniques, low radiated noise levels and ability to attack with precision-guided weapons on board.
This class is considered superior as they include several aspects of naval combat performing anti-ship, anti-submarine, intelligence, mine laying, and area surveillance operations.
Project 75
Project 75 entails the construction of six submarines of Scorpene design at the government-owned Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai in collaboration with the French Naval Group (formerly known as DCNS).
Three of these submarines are already in commission with the Indian Navy
INS Karanj
INS Kalvari
INS Khanderi
INS Vagir was launched last year and INS Vagsheer, is under construction.
Significance of Project 75
Construction of these submarines in an Indian yard is yet another step towards ‘AatmaNirbhar Bharat’.
It acts as a deterrence mechanism to counter China and Pakistan and to protect Indo-Pacific
