Kisan Suryoday Yojana

Context

On 24th October Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Kisan Suryoday Yojana in Gujarat, via video conferencing.

Highlights

  • The objective of the scheme is to provide day time power supply for irrigation.

  • Under this scheme, farmers are to be availed with power supply from 5 AM to 9 PM.

  • The state government of Gujarat has approved a budget of Rs 3,500 crores for the implementation of the scheme.

  • By 2023, these funds will install transmission infrastructure.

  • Under the scheme, around 234 transmission lines are to be installed and each line is intended to carry power of 66 KW. They are to be erected to a total length of 3,490 km. Additional 220 KV substations are also to be installed.

  • Approximately 3,500 kilometres of new transmission lines will be laid under this scheme in the next 2-3 years and will be implemented in more than 1,000 villages in the coming days and majority of these villages are in tribal dominated areas.

  • Most of the farmers earlier obtained power for irrigation only at night and had to wake up all night. The farmers also face the problems of wild animals in Girnar and Junagadh. But now under the Kisan Suryodaya Yojana, farmers will get three-phase power supply from 5 AM to 9 PM and bring a new dawn in their lives.

  • Providing electricity during the day will help the farmers in setting up micro irrigation and Kisan Suryodaya Yojana will also help in the expansion of micro irrigation in the state.

  • Dahod, Patan, Mahisagar, Panchmahal, Chhota Udepur, Kheda, Tapi, Valsad, Anand and Gir-Somnath have been included under the Scheme for 2020-21. The remaining districts will be covered in a phase-wise manner by 2022-23.

Note: PM Modi will also launch two other projects alongside the Kisan Suryoday Project.

  • A ropeway will be inaugurated at Girnar in Junagadh district.
  • PM Modi will also inaugurate the UN Mehta Heart Research Institute and a Mobile Application for tele-cardiology at the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad.
