Improved SILAM and ENFUSER models launched by IMD

Context

The Indian Meteorological Department operationalized improved air quality forecast models: SILAM and ENFUSER on October 14, 2020. In Delhi, there are more than 40 air quality monitoring systems.

Key highlights

  • ENFUSER (Environmental Information FUsion SERvice) is the new model which has been made operational for Delhi.

  • ENFUSER is a high-resolution city scale model

  • According to IMD’s ENFUSER air quality forecast model launched on 14th october.

  • It will identify air pollution hotspots and pollution up to street level.

  • The specialty of the ENFUSER is the high utilization of measurement data such as air quality observations, a detailed description of the road network, buildings, land-use information, high-resolution satellite images, ground elevation and population data.

  • ENFUSER natively taps into the operative IMD’s regional SILAM access point.
  1. System for Integrated modelling of Atmospheric composition is another air quality forecast model of the IMD that has been extensively validated against observations over the Indian region.

  2. SILAM is meant for the entire country.

  3. By implementing global emission inventories such as CAMS-GLOB and EDGAR for mineral fine anthropogenic particulate matter at 10 kilometers resolution, the model has been enhanced.

  4. It was established by the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

  5. The model provides information such as equality atmospheric composition and Wildfire smoke.

  6. SILAM is capable of solving the inverse dispersion problem.

  7. The model is capable of taking data from number of sources such as sea salt, Pollen and blown dust.

  • The ENFUSER results are evaluated with the satellite measurements and observations, and the model is found to capture the hotspots over Delhi very well. In technical collaboration with the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) SILAM and ENFUSER have been developed

  • WRF-Chem is another air quality model that has been updated by the Indian Meteorological Department.
