CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT) has introduced cultivation of asafoetida (Heeng) in Lahaul valley in Himachal Pradesh to utilize vast expanses of wasteland in the cold desert conditions of the region.
For this, CSIR-IHBT has launched six seed accessions from Iran through the ICAR-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBPGR).
Asafoetida is the dried latex. It is native to the deserts of Iran and mountains of Afghanistan. The resin like gum that comes out of dried sap from roots and stem is used as spice.
