Samudrayaan Mission

Recently, the Ministry of Earth Sciences(MoES), Government of India (GoI) confirmed that the Samudrayaan Mission is scheduled to explore the bed of the ocean by 2025 end.

Key Highlights


Nodal Ministry: Ministry of Earth Science (MoES), Government of India.

(i) Under this mission, India is on a path to send its scientists to study the deep ocean 6,000 m to the ocean bed in the Central Indian Ocean.

(ii) Objective:  It aims to send three scientists in a submersible MATSYA 6000 to a depth of 6000m for exploration of deep-sea resources like minerals, including polymetallic nodules and polymetallic sulfides.

(iii) ‘Samudrayaan’, is a part of the Deep Ocean Mission (DOM) undertaken by the Ministry of Earth Science(MoES), Government of India (GoI).

Deep Ocean Mission (DOM)


India’s Deep Ocean Mission (DOM) is implemented by the Ministry Of Earth Sciences, Government of India. 

India’s flagship Deep Ocean Mission (DOM) is one of nine missions under the Prime Minister’s Science, Technology, and Innovation Advisory Council (PMSTIAC), Government of India.

Outcomes

(a) It supports the central government's blue economy policy.

(b) The mission is significant for the sustainable extraction of valuable mineral resources, including polymetallic nodules and polymetallic sulfides.
