Recently, during the inauguration of the new Parliament building, Prime Minister
Narendra Modi installed a sceptre, called the ‘Sengol’, in the Lok Sabha.

Key Highlights:

• The ‘Sengol’ scepter carries significant historical significance as it was gifted to Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, representing the handover of authority from British colonial rule.
• Derived from the Tamil word ‘semi,’ which means excellence, the ‘Sengol’ represents the embodiment of power and authority.
• It was inspired by a similar ceremony in the Chola dynasty, where power was transferred between kings.
