New Chief Election Commissioner
Former Union Finance Secretary Rajiv Kumar has been appointed as the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).
He will oversee the 2024 national polls as well as the assembly elections in some states during his tenure including Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, etc.
Election Commission of India
Election commission of India is an autonomous constitutional authority which administers elections to Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, State Legislative Assemblies and offices of the President and Vice President in the country.
It is constituted under Article 324 of the Indian constitution.
It consists of three members- One Chief Election Commissioner and two Election Commissioners.
The office term is 6 years or until they attain 65 years, whichever happens first.
