Operation Ganga

• The Government of India has launched a ‘multi-pronged’ initiative named ‘Operation Ganga’ to bring back all the Indian nationals who are currently stranded in Ukraine.

• A dedicated Twitter handle ‘OpGanga Helpline’ to assist Indian evacuation from Ukraine has also been announced.

• It has also set up 24×7 control centers to assist in the evacuation of Indians through the border crossing points with Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovak Republic.

Other Evacuation Operations

• Vande Bharat (2020): When the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world, the Centre launched this mission to bring back Indian citizens stranded in foreign countries.

• Operation Raahat (2015):  India evacuated many people from Yemen when a conflict raged between the Yemeni government and Houthi rebels in 2015.

• Operation Safe Homecoming (2011): during Libyan Civil War

• Operation Sukoon (2006): when conflict broke out between Israel and Lebanon

• 1990 Kuwait Airlift (1990): when Iraqi soldiers marched into Kuwait
