Gita Gopinath: IMF First Deputy Managing Director
She is the first Indian to take up the second-highest position at the global economic body.
Gopinath will take over from Geoffrey Okamoto on January 21, 2022.
She was born in Kolkata in 1971. She now holds a United States citizenship and is an Overseas Citizen of India.
She was also the first woman chief economist in the history of the International Monetary Fund.
She was awarded the Parvasi Bharatiya Samman in 2019 by the President of India.
About IMF
The IMF was conceived in July 1944 at the United Nations Bretton Woods Conference
The IMF is funded by quota subscriptions. Member states pay according to the size of their economy, and voting rights are based on this quota
It is a specialized agency of the United Nations and is run by its 190 member countries
Primary aims of IMF
Promote international monetary cooperation;
Facilitate the expansion and balanced growth of international trade;
Promote exchange stability;
Assist in the establishment of a multilateral system of payments; and
Make resources available (with adequate safeguards) to members experiencing balance-of-payments difficulties.
