Gita Gopinath: IMF First Deputy Managing Director


  • She is the first Indian to take up the second-highest position at the global economic body.

  • Gopinath will take over from Geoffrey Okamoto on January 21, 2022.

  • She was born in Kolkata in 1971. She now holds a United States citizenship and is an Overseas Citizen of India. 

  • She was also the first woman chief economist in the history of the International Monetary Fund.

  • She was awarded the Parvasi Bharatiya Samman in 2019 by the President of India. 

About IMF

  •  The IMF was conceived in July 1944 at the United Nations Bretton Woods Conference

  • The IMF is funded by quota subscriptions. Member states pay according to the size of their economy, and voting rights are based on this quota

  • It is a specialized agency of the United Nations and is run by its 190 member countries

Primary aims of IMF

  • Promote international monetary cooperation;

  • Facilitate the expansion and balanced growth of international trade;

  • Promote exchange stability;

  • Assist in the establishment of a multilateral system of payments; and

  • Make resources available (with adequate safeguards) to members experiencing balance-of-payments difficulties.
