TIGER X-1

Context

The Hyundai Motor Group has designed a walking car concept robot known as TIGER which stands for transforming intelligent ground excursion robots.

Key Highlights

  • TIGER X-1 is the first version of TIGER. The robot is based on the modular platform architecture.

  • The robot has 360-degree directional control which helps in surface evaluation in disaster prone areas.

  • TIGER X-1 does not carry passengers but it can carry cargo and sensors to remotely observe the surroundings.

  • It has been designed to operate autonomously and it comprises a sophisticated leg and wheel locomotion system.

  • It is a smart mobility solution provider which has four legs, four wheels, and a friendly flying companion.

    • Each of the four legs has six articulation points between the chassis and wheel, allowing it to traverse a variety of rugged surfaces.

  • This ultimate mobility vehicle (UMV) has the features of both the robotic technology and the wheeled locomotion technology. Thus, the vehicle is capable of traversing the difficult terrain.

  • The ultimate mobility vehicle (UMV) uses its ability to walk when it gets stuck or when required to travel in the difficult terrain not only on Earth but on other planets as well.

  • Further, it can also connect with the drones. Drones can help in charging the UMVs and delivering it to inaccessible locations.

  • It can be used to carry goods for the delivery or delivery of the aid packages in emergency situations.

  • TIGER X-1 is the second ultimate mobility vehicle (UMV) by Hyundai Motor Group.

    • The first UMV by the Hyundai Motor Group was launched at the 2019 consumer electronics show. It comprises features like moveable legs, it could elevate and was designed to carry the passengers.

  • Militaries could also find it useful for surveillance missions, as the Tiger is also quite small, measuring just 31 inches long and 16 inches wide when folded, and weighs only 26 pounds. Its compact size and low weight make it easy to deploy.
