World Sustainable Development Summit 2021

Context 

Recently, the Indian Prime Minister will inaugurate the World Sustainable Development Summit 2021, the annual flagship event of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).

Key Highlights 

• The key partners of the Summit were India’s Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, and Ministry of Earth Sciences.

• The theme of the 2021 Summit was ‘Redefining our common future: Safe and secure environment for all’.

• The Summit will bring together a wide number of governments, business leaders, academicians, climate scientists, youth, and civil society in the fight against climate change.

• The Summit intends to carry forward the vital discussions from the Global South to the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties in Glasgow.

• The Summit aimed to steer discussions towards strengthening commitment to maximizing renewable energy, enhancing capacity to deal with the changing climate, and creating financial flows to help enable these actions.

• The 1st thematic track on the topic 'Electricity Transition in India: National as well as State-level Interventions' was held at the World Sustainable Development Summit 2021. The eminent panel deliberated on India's imminent electricity transition, renewable integration and the need for grid flexibility in the electricity sector.
