Context
Recently, the Union Minister of Tribal Affairs Shri Arjun Munda has virtually launched the "ShramShakti" a National Migration Support Portal to smooth the formulation of state and national level programs for migrant workers
Key Highlights
ShramShakti Portal has been launched to collect data related to tribal migrant workers and link them with the existing welfare schemes.
The minister also launched a tribal migration cell, a tribal museum at Goa and “ShramSaathi”, a training manual for migrant workers to ensure that the process of livelihood migration is safe and productive.
ShramShakti Portal will record various data including demographic profile, livelihood options, skill mapping, and migration pattern. This would effectively help in the smooth formulation of state and national level programs for migrant workers.
The tribal migration repository would be able to effectively address the data gap and empower migrant workers who generally migrate in search of jobs and income generation.
It would also help the government in linking the migrant population with the existing Welfare Scheme under Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
ShramShakti Portal would also help to address the issues of various related migrants such as Trafficking, Wages harassment issues, Occupational hazards at the workplace, etc.
Why do we require such a portal?
Migrants all over the country had to face problems after the lockdown was announced due to the pandemic caused by a coronavirus.
The migration of the tribal population is distress-driven and the migrants are exposed to difficult and unsafe conditions.
Sometimes migrants also face trafficking or wage harassment issues including many occupational hazards at the workplace.
The lack of real-time data of migrants was the biggest challenge for the governments in formulating effective strategies and policy decisions for the welfare of migrant workers at both source and destination states.
