Himalayan Serow 


Context:

  • The Himalayan Serow was seen for the first time in the harsh desert of the Himalayas. The Himalayan Serow was recently considered to be extinct.
  • It is an exceptionally shy species that can only be seen during the winter as it migrates to lower elevations.

  • It is a medium-sized animal with a thick body, a large head, small arms, mules like ears and a coat of dark fur.

Conservation status:

  • The International Union for Conservation of Nature had listed the Himalayan Serows as ‘Near Threatened’. The IUCN has now changed their status to ’vulnerable’. 

  • It has been listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Also, it has been included in CITES Appendix I.
