E-Courts Project
The E-Courts Initiative has been incorporated as part of the National E-Governance Programme since 2007. The project is focused on the National Strategy and Action Plan on the Introduction of Information and Communication Technology in the Judiciary.
The key goal of the project is to exploit ICT and offer designated services to lawyers, litigants and the judiciary.
Key Points:
The E-Courts initiative is currently under two stages. Step I was completed between 2010 and 2015. Phase II is being introduced between 2015 and 2020 at a rate of Rs 1670 crores. The core goals of the project are as follows:
Provide time-bound citizen-centric programmes.
Installation, production and application of decision support services in the courts
Automate procedures to offer accountability to stakeholders.
To enhance judicial productivity and to make the justice delivery accessible, predictable, transparent and reliable.
The project is funded by the Ministry of Law and Justice.
Note:
E-Courts are electronic courts where legal matters are resolved in the presence of a competent judge.
They're different from a computerised court. In E-courts, litigants can file their pleadings remotely, display their case status online, pay court costs and online fines.
