Operation Blackface, TRACE and Crawler 


  • Maharashtra Police's cyber wing has recently acquired INTERPOL's "Crawler" software to help track child pornography. A core team of 12 officers has been set up to carry out a task concerning the software.

  • These twelve officers went to the South Asian wing of INTERPOL for preparation. The unit was called TRACE. TRACE is a tactical approach to cyber child exploitation.

About Crawler software:

  • The programme obtained from INTERPOL uses a number of techniques, such as the identification of nudity in photographs and the recognition of the age of the individual by their facial structures.

About TRACE:

  • The TRACE unit has been set up as part of a wider fight against child sexual abuse (CSAM) around the country since 2019. The team has recently trained about 270 policemen across Maharashtra to use this programme to monitor these incidents.

Operation Blackface:

  • This is part of the acts of the Maharashtra State Police against Child Sexual Abuse Data. The activity requires the use of Crawler tools and the deployment of the TRACE squad.
