BharatGen: Multimodel Large Language Model Initiative

Recently, the Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India has launched an initiative “BharatGen” world’s first government-funded multimodal language model.


Key Highlights
  • BharatGen is designed to revolutionize public service delivery through foundational models in language, speech and computer vision.
  • The initiative is being implemented by the IIT Bombay under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS), of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.
  • It is a Multimodal Large Language Model project focused on creating generative AI systems that can generate high-quality text and multimodal content in various Indian languages.
  • It aims to address India’s broader socio-cultural and linguistic diversity while ensuring that generative AI reaches all segments of society.
  • It will focus on developing processes for collecting and curating India-centric data, ensuring that the country’s diverse languages, dialects, and cultural contexts are accurately represented.
